I generally prefer photographing animals in the wild and have mixed feelings about keeping great apes in zoos. Yet this orangutan's direct gaze made a lasting impression and resulted in a portrait I didn't want to leave behind. For me, the photograph is less about the place and more about the individual, whose quiet presence fills the frame.
